March and April are the months of graduation for most university students. Two of my close friends have requested graduation cards for their daughters. Fortunately, I have just the pop up card design for this occasion: a graduation card that looks like a gown and has a pop up cap when the card opens.

I used two A5 black cardstocks to make one card. The first cardstock forms the gown. To make this, I scored the card crosswise at 2 inches – 6 inches – 8 inches, and then I just cut off the excess. The second card is for the cap. It measures 4 inches by 6.5 inches. I scored the card crosswise at 0.5 inches and 2.5 inches. Then from the corner of the 0.5 inches score line, I scored the cardstock diagonally to meet the corners of an imaginary score line 4 inches from this line.

I created a video tutorial on how to make this pop up graduation card just because it’s a bit difficult to explain the process without visuals. But once you have created the gown and cap, the handmade card design is pretty much done. The only thing needed to be done is to add in the details such as the triangles at the opening and the white space for message inside.

For the final touch, a graduation toga is not complete without the tassel. I’m sure the tassel can be bought at arts & crafts stores, but I diy’d this one from a yellow DMC thread. It doesn’t have to be yellow, though. You can be creative with this one and choose your own colours.
The toga looked a bit empty and so I decided to add the year 2024 at the bottom in gold cardstock. This completes the look and your handmade card is ready to be given away.
Here is a grey and pink version of this card.
