Handmade Christmas Pop-Up Card Light Up Chimney

Handmade christmas pop up card led tealight candle red and green plaid

Hello friends! It’s finally December and I’m so excited to share another DIY Christmas pop-up card tutorial. This Christmas cardmaking project is actually a spin off from one of my designs last year. It’s a pop up Christmas card that you can turn into a paper lantern when you place a LED tealight candle behind the chimney.

If you have lots of family and friends on your Christmas list you want to give Christmas cards to, it’s ideal to come up with easy handmade holiday card designs so you can recreate them in bulk. This pop up Christmas card may look complex but once you get the hang of pop up cards, you will find that they’re actually easy to make. I created a tutorial post on how to make pop up cards which you may want to check out to give you an idea on the various kinds of pop up cards you can make.

It is quite difficult to write down a step-by-step pop up card guide so I’m in the process of creating a video tutorial instead. For this particular cardmaking project, I created a fireplace I cut a hole in the chimney’s open which will glow when you put a LED tealight candle behind the. I cut the opening of the fireplace and covered it with vellum paper which I coloured with alcohol markers. Without the light, the fireplace looks like a regular drawing but the light will shine through the vellum when the LED tealight candle is on.

One of my creative holiday cardmaking tips is to maximise my available crafting stash. Instead of buying new stamp sets, I mixed and match my old stamp sets to create the scene for this DIY Christmas card. Not only will it create a unique Christmas card design, it’s also a great way to stretch your stash so you get the most value out of your crafting supplies. The mama bear, baby bear, and books were from Lawn Fawn Den Sweet Den. The little Christmas tree was from Stampin’ Up! Cuckoo For You, and the Merry Christmas banner was from Hello Bluebird Cocoa Party. The sentiment I used was also from Stampin’ Up! Our House to Yours. All of these stamp sets were from old release, some of them may even be retired and it’s fun to bring them back to life again.

To add accents to this festive pop up card, I used a snowflake stencil and white Tsukineko ink pad for the wall background. I also added a kraft brown platform for extra pop up effect so this DIY Christmas card design is sure to have lots of dimension. This also raises the chimney opening a bit higher so that it aligns with the LED light when you place it behind. On both ends of the Christmas greeting banner, I also added pine holly berries from red rhinestones and green tissue paper pine leaves.
