Easy Handmade Holiday Cards: Irisdescent Background

diy christmas card tutorial easy and quick for beginners using christmas gift wrappers

Hello friends! I’m back with an exciting handmade Christmas cardmaking project. If you are pushed for time and you want to create personalized and unique Christmas cards for your friends, families, and colleagues, I’ve got an easy handmade holiday card idea to share today.

Would you believe if I told you that the iridescent background for this DIY Christmas card design was actually a $3 gift wrapping paper which I bought from a Dollar Store? I saw the wrapping paper and was mesmerized by the glitter / iridescent look (other than pop up cards, I love sparkles and shine on my cardmaking projects by the way) and I immediately came up with this quick Christmas card idea.

Since the background is already busy, I went with a simple add on design. Busy backgrounds like this work well with big word die cuts and for this particular festive card, I used the big letter dies from Stampin’ Up! cut in thick white cardstock. I wanted the letters to have more dimension so that the word JOY stands out from the background so I used foam sheets behind each letters too. I went for the word JOY because it matched with the Christmas wrapping paper design but it works well with other short words too like MERRY, BRIGHT, HAPPY, PEACE, FUN, SNOW, WISHES, and so on.

I can’t emphasize how easy this handmade holiday card design is. One cardmaking trick I do when creating in batches is to cut all the parts first, organize them, and then assembling the pieces together is quicker and easier. This cardmaking technique works well when making a simple card like this or detailed holiday Christmas cards like the Holiday House Easel Pop Up Card I shared in my previous post.

Finally, for a subtle accent, I added faux white pearls around the sentiment. I kept this Christmas card design very simple such that this cardmaking project is fit for a beginner, Other than that, I wanted to bring out the beauty of the Christmas wrapping paper. I hope this project inspired you! So remember to keep those offcuts when you wrap your gifts this Christmas and make a personalized Christmas card. Wouldn’t it be cute to send a matching Christmas card with your gift too?
